Biography of Gian Carlo Menotti
Gian Carlo Menotti was an Italian-American composer and librettist, widely regarded as one of the most prominent opera composers of the 20th century.
Early Life and Education
Menotti was born on July 7, 1911, in Cadegliano, near Milan, Italy.
In 1923, he enrolled at the Milan Conservatory and at the age of 17, he received a scholarship to study composition at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, USA.
Operatic Career
Menotti completed his studies at the Curtis Institute in 1933 and the same year, he finished his first opera, "Amelia goes to the Ball," which was premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1938.
